Wear Teal on the 28th
We don't have a TMJ day yet, so International Rare Disease day will have to be our day. Wear your teal ribbons and teal colored clothes (if you have any) to commemorate this day.

I have been off work for a few years now. To keep myself busy I do a lot of crafts. I also find that when I am in pain, I work on my crafts. It helps to keep my mind off the pain. It doesn't reduce the pain, but it helps to make it more "tolerable". Plus I love working with my hands.
I make all kinds of accessories; sweater clips, scarf pins, brooches/pins, and scarves. One of the most popular items is the infinity scarf. It is light weight, doubles as a necklace/jewelry and can be dressed up or down. I recently started making my own felt through a process called wet felting. Some of my wet felting items include felted dryer balls, felted soap, and brooches. You can see and purchase my creations at www.smileyscreations.com A twenty year follow-up study was conducted on patient-fitted TMJ prothesis devices from TMJ Concepts. The good news is that at a median age of 21 years after surgery, te Techmedica/TMJ Concepts TJR continued to function well. You can read the full article at http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/25631865. One of the my greatest fears is having to endure another TMJ Replacement surgery. Will I have to endure another surgery in this lifetime? As I cross my fingers and knock on wood, I am hoping the answer is "no", not only for myself but for all those who have had replacement surgery. I often wonder how long the prosthetic is going to last. Sometimes I think I should talk less and chew less in order to preserve the device and increase the number of years that it will last in my body. This is good news that the prosthetic from TMJ Concepts is lasting 20+ years.
This week, I created a new Facebook Group called "TMJ Replacement & Surgical Support Group". The purpose of this group is to help others who will or have had TMJ related surgery. The main criteria for joining this group is that you have had a TMJ related surgery, or are scheduled to have one such as arthroplasty, arthroscopy, discestomy, disk repositioning, condylotomy and of course joint replacement.
For those who have had TMJ Replacement surgery, think back to the time when you were contemplating or waiting for your TMJ Replacement...... how valuable would a support group have been to you where you could ask fellow TMJ Replacement Survivors questions about their experience? I'm sure your answer would be... PRICELESS. That is the reason for forming this support group. The greatest response or comment that I get to my blog from those who have had a TMJ Joint replacement is how close my experience was to theirs. In general, most can relate to 80% of my experience. The greatest response to my blog from those who have not yet had a replacement surgery is that information on serious TMJ issues is practically non-existent. It's even more rare to find anyone who has had a TMJ related surgery, particularly a TMJ Replacement surgery. The support group will be an extension of my blog. I plan to continue posting weekly entries to my blog (www.tmj1.weebly.com). My objective for the Support group is to have monthly conference calls. That way, everyone can participate regardless of location. The only cost is the normal long distance charge from your local telephone/mobile carrier. I plan to keep the group upbeat and avoid becoming a dreaded "bitching" or "complaining" session. The group's mission will to help each other. The conference calls will focus on the human part of the process, the experience. We will share our experiences and tips for dealing with TMJ pain. If you are interested in joining the group, look up TMJ Replacement and Surgical Support Group on Facebook and request to join the group. If you don't have a Facebook account, send me an email at [email protected] and I will email you the details about upcoming meetings. The first meeting will start at the end of February. Date & Time to be announced. The conference calls will be held during the evening hours on a weeknight. |
